Mathematical Whetstones - Primary Concepts is a book written for teachers and pre-service teachers in the primary sector, it is also addressed to anyone interested in understanding basic mathematical ideas. The work covers fundamental notions in number and space and the various constructions that flow from them. The 28 chapters unpack concepts on a range of topics which are aligned with the Australian National Curriculum for example numbers and their historical development, the four basic operations, concepts around fractions, ratio and rate, and their application to measurement.
Mathematical Whetstones - Sharpening Understandings is a collection of 80 mathematical explanations, discoveries and explorations. Suitable for use by teachers who are looking for inspiring narratives and explicit mathematical connections to enhance their classroom experiences, or by mathematics enthusiast looking for a unique approach to mathematical understanding.
The book is designed and written with teachers in mind and topics are mapped to the Australian Senior Mathematics Curriculum.
Each Whetstone is a four-page article, containing ideas, connections, understandings and applications. The articles are designed in the first place for teachers, but they may also be photocopied and used as guided lesson material for students (provided that the teacher who owns the book is teaching those students, there is no issue regarding copyright).
